Our History

At the request of Dr. Ernest Holmes, founder of the Religious Science movement, Dr. Robert H. Bitzer established the first branch of Religious Science in Hollywood, California.

Through Dr. Bitzer’s absolute dedication to Truth and his clarity of thought and depth of understanding of the teaching, the Hollywood Church became a renowned center for metaphysical learning throughout the world.  Many of his students became ministers and went forward to further the teaching of Religious Science.

In 1987, after 57 years of serving as pastor, Dr. Bitzer assigned as co-pastor Dr. Domenic A. Polifrone, a recognized speaker and teacher.  For the next three years, they made a great team, and in June 1990, Dr. Polifrone went on to start his own work, forming the New Thought Center of Los Angeles.

Dr. Bitzer again took over the full time pastorship until his transition on May 30, 1994, at the age of 98.  His wife of 53 years, the late Marguerite C. Bitzer, also an ordained minister of Religious Science, was instrumental in the growth and success of the Hollywood Church.

To carry on Dr. Bitzer’s work, Dr. Polifrone was asked to be the Spiritual Director, and his New Thought Center merged with the Hollywood Church on March 3, 1996.

In 2002 Dr. Polifrone went on sabbatical to Maywood, NJ, and asked Reverend Pamela A. MacGregor to be the assistant Spiritual Director. Reverend Pam accepted and at Dr. Polifrone’s request is now the Spiritual Director of the Science of Mind Spiritual Center Los Angeles.
